Date & Time: Friday 15 August, 11:00 am & 11:45

This
presentation will look at the responsibilities of people
under the Health & Safety in Employment Act 1992
[HSE Act].
The
5 x sections selected from the HSE Act have influence
over many situations that people are part of in the
working environment.
These
5 sections have an impact on employers, employees, the
principal, contractors, visitors and their associated
responsibilities.
There
are many instances during contracting that wearing different
hats at the same time occurs - we need to understand
our responsibilities under the HSE act.
The
5 sections will be discussed and applied using actual
events to further reinforce understanding and awareness
of the HSE act.

Seminar: Plants to use in the landscape
Location: Meeting Room 2
Date & Time: Thursday 14 August, 3:00 pm & 3:45
pm
Plants
to use in the landscape
In our temperate climate we are able to grow a wide
range of plant material. The form and style of many
of our native plants has yet to be fully explored -
exploited. While many native plants have been used over
the years they are nearly always planted following slavishly
the English style, hedges being clipped and pruned,
shrubs and grasses in formal settings. Our plants beg
for a better deal. Divaricating plants lead their form
to interesting plantscaping and with the integration
of Restiads and longer living grasses can bring a whole
new style into the landscape with movement, colour and
diversity.

New Zealand's Grafton Gully Project (GGP) has received
several awards in recognition of outstanding performance
in environmental management, and has been identified
as an example of good sustainability practice in action.
The $67 million, 27-month improvement project connected
the Northwestern and Southern Motorways with the Ports
of Auckland and lower central business district, and
was aimed at reducing congestion in the gully. GGP was
completed six months early and 5% under budget.
This
session will overview the lessons learned, and success
stories from the project, and considers their applicability
in the wider context of infrastructure projects within
New Zealand.

Seminar: Sustainable landscapes
Location: Meeting Room 1
Date & Time: Friday 15 August, 1:30 pm & 2:15
pm
If
landscape architects are to promote themselves as the
solution providers for sustainable urban and open spaces
we need to develop an understanding of our own environmental
impacts and the best ways to mitigate. Over the course
of a career most landscape architects will be responsible
for generating of thousands of tons of carbon through
specifying vast material consumption.
To
move forward in sustainable practices we have to review
our assumptions; the reality is that sustainability
assumes that there will be environmental damage and
hence aims to minimize it. The carbon costs of our projects
needs to be added to the equation in a transparent way,
which means landscape architects, should produce the
carbon figures for their projects and how the carbon
figure was minimized and offset.
