Bryce Coulter is the owner of Green Therapy, a landscaping business launched after the Canterbury earthquakes in 2011. Bryce recently won the Supreme Landscaper of the Year Award at the 2022 Landscapes of Distinction Awards for his work on an incredible and sustainable Lake Wakatipu project.

2022 was his first year entering the awards and Bryce is thrilled with the win after only belonging to Registered Master Landscapers for less than a year.

“I never thought we would win the Supreme Award, it is amazing. There was some fantastic competition, so it was truly unexpected. I think what stood out about Bob’s Cove was how different it was, Green Therapy was able to focus on environmental values and planting knowledge within a wider team of designers and hard landscaping professionals, each of whom was equally passionate about the project. We also documented the project throughout the years that we were involved, and this helped with the entry process,” said Bryce.

Bob’s Cove was a five-year passion project for the team at Green Therapy and it drew on the team’s experience and enthusiasm for natural landscapes.

“I completed my degree at Lincoln University in Horticulture and have always had a love of planting. When we launched Green Therapy, I initially focused the business on planting and maintenance as this was an area where I saw a knowledge gap in the market. Since then, our growth and team development has meant our projects now include 3d contemporary design, complex builds and a focus on unique landscaping elements. However, to get the opportunity to work on a natural landscape concept, like Bob’s Cove, was a dream,” says Bryce.

Bob’s Cove Retreat is a distinctly Lake Wakatipu landscape for a residential home build, it embraced native planting alongside supporting local wildlife and was unique due to the extreme climate conditions of the site.

“The site experiences extreme New Zealand climate conditions with extremes of rain, drought, wind, harsh afternoon summer highs, hoar frosts and snow. Hardiness and plant species selection was critical to success. Our clients wanted a relaxing retreat in harmony with the grandeur of Lake Wakatipu and surrounds. A place to reconnect with nature and enhance the local environment. The site meant something to everyone who worked on it, including the homeowner and all the trades and professionals,” said Bryce.

Bryce and the team at Green Therapy work on projects in Queenstown, but largely focus their attention to the Christchurch market. With seven full time staff, the team are dedicated to working on projects that inspire them.

“We are not chasing volume; we are chasing work that we love. This is an important part of our business model and something I am proud of as a business owner,” says Bryce.

Janine Scott, CEO of Registered Master Landscapers, says that Bob’s Cove Retreat is a special project that deserved the industry recognition.  “Registered Master Landscapers are proud to support the landscaping industry through our Landscapes of Distinction Awards. Bob’s Cove Retreat is a truly stunning garden and  exemplary landscape project demonstrating significant ecological contribution to its wider environment.   Well done to Bryce and the team at Green Therapy,” said Scott.
